BREEDING UNIT
All registered animals, whether owned by one person or by more than one person, which are maintained on one farm, are considered to be the production of one breeding unit. Where more than 1 person or family member is part of an existing unit, they may consign under their individual name (Consignor Unit) and sell with the existing breeding unit or individually in their alphabetical rotation.
RELEASE OF BULLS Sellers are prohibited to teardown or load out bulls until all Breed Sales are completed . No bulls may be removed from the sale premises without a release slip, which must be presented to designated staff upon release.
ALCOHOL POLICY
The serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages in a non-licensed area of a public building is illegal and in contravention of the AGLC regulations. Additionally, this practice poses liability and safety issues for all stakeholders (directors, agriculture representatives, youth and you the consignors). The serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages in a non-licensed area is prohibited.
Section I: Rules of Entry
NUMBER OF BULLS:No restrictions
Entry Closing: ENTRIES CLOSE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2007. Entries must be made on the official Alberta Cattle Breeders Association Bull Sale Entry Form . Additional forms are available upon request by contacting the Agriculture Entries Office at (403) 261-0313. Entries must be received in the office by 4:00 pm on December 7, 2007. Facsimiled entry forms will not be accepted. Sub stitution requests will be accepted and must be received in writing in the Agriculture Entries Office by 4:00 pm on February 25, 2008 . A $20.00 fee and signed official breed registration paper must accompany this notice for each substitution
.
All entries to the Calgary Bull Sale must be accompanied by the entry fee and a certificate of registration issued by the respective breed association. This certificate must include a signature authorizing transfer of ownership. The date of issue and the date of transfer must be dated prior to entry closing date of December 7th , 2007.
Entry Fee: A NONREFUNDABLE entry fee of $150.00 (GST included) per bull plus a $10.60 (GST included) Annual Membership Fee per Breeding/Consignor Unit per breed, payable to the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association is due at the time of entry. The membership fee per breeding unit is required regardless of the number of entities within the breeding unit. The entry fee paid by the contributor to the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association will be forfeited and remain the sole property of the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association if the bull is culled, rejected, or if entries are cancelled after the official closing date of Friday, December 7 th , 2007.
In view of the $150 entry fee, $100 of that fee is prepaid commission. A sale commission of 8% of the last dollar bid will be in effect.
A non-refundable entry fee for bulls not comply with the standards of entry to the sale ( no refund on vet outs). In order to facilitate stabling, notification of a bull withdrawal must be in the Agriculture Office in
writing by February 22, 2008 at 4:00 pm. Veterinarian Certificates must be submitted prior to weigh-in and may be facsimiled or mailed.
Conditions of Entry : The Canadian registration certificate in compliance with the individual breed association and an application for transfer on the proper form, duly signed in ink, with the name of the transferee left blank, must accompany the application for entry, or the entry will be returned.
Members Must Own Entries: Each bull entered must be the property of a member of the Association who is a bona-fide resident of Alberta and who is conducting a livestock breeding establishment of the breed in Alberta . Bulls not bred by the contributor and bred in Alberta must be owned, transferred and certificate issued "Canadian Pedigree" in the contributor's name before the entry closing date . Bulls not bred in Alberta and owned by a contributor, must be transferred and certificate issued "Canadian Pedigree" in the contributor's name before entry closing date. In the case where a bull has multiple owners, the transfer rules indicated previously apply to all owners listed on the registration paper.
Parking Fee : A parking pass is available on the entry form for a cost of $36.00 (GST included) per vehicle and guarantees preferred parking for the Calgary Bull Sale. The parking pass (es) will be mailed to exhibitors. If more than one vehicle is to be used, additional parking passes should be purchased on the entry form.
Membership Fee: A $10.60 (GST included) Membership Fee per Breeding/Consignor Unit is required regardless of the number of entries within the Breeding/Consignor Unit, thus allowing ONE VOTING MEMBER PER BREEDING/CONSIGNOR UNIT (or in the case where a Breeding/Consignor unit has multi breeds they would be allowed a vote for each paid membership) . However, persons interested in the cattle industry in Alberta , although not breeders or cattle owners, may join the Association as Associate Members, upon payment of $10.60 (GST included) per year. Such Associate Members may attend the meeting of the Association, and take part in the discussions but will not be eligible for office, and may not vote.
Stalling: Consignors will be allowed to tie their bulls together where one fitting organization is fitting the entire string. All consignors with bulls remaining in the Agricultural Building after 12:00 noon on FRIDA Y, MARCH 7, 2008 must make arrangements with the ACBA.
DRY BRUSH SHOW: The Calgary Bull Sale is declared a "Dry Brush" Show. The use of GLUES, ADHESIVES OR PAINT to fit bulls for the show/sale ring will NOT BE ALLOWED.
Tampering: There will be no tampering with stall allotments allowed. Unnatural practices in fitting will not be tolerated, and all cattle entered for competition shall be presented in the judging ring and/or sale ring in their natural conformation and natural physical condition. To ensure this clause is being complied with, a statutory declaration may be required. Any products/solutions/liquids administered internally or externally to alter the conformation or weight of the animal is prohibited.
Bedding: In order to establish uniformity of exhibits, no platforms or sand will be allowed under bulls in the Agriculture Barn. Shavings, straw, woodchips and pliable matting may be used for bedding. Initial bedding will be supplied and shavings are available at the barn. A deduction of $7.42 per bull weighed will be paid to the Alberta Cattle Breeders. Special lighting is not allowed. Feed and bedding must be kept to a minimum in the barn as it constitutes a fire hazard. A fine will be levied on the exhibitor if the ruling is not adhered to.
Temperament of Bulls: Any bull that, in the opinion of the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association, is deemed uncontrollable or exhibits a temperament that may cause injury or damage will be asked to leave the premises.
Breeding Unit: All registered animals, whether owned by one person or by more than one person, which are maintained on one farm, are considered to be the production of one breeding unit. Where more than 1 person or family member is part of an existing unit, they may consign under their individual name and sell with the existing breeding unit or individually in their alphabetical rotation.
Age of Bulls : No animal born prior to January 1, 2005 or later than March 31, 2007 shall be eligible for entry.
Breeding Unit Name Change: All entries made under one breeding or consignor unit will show and sell together and be catalogued under the breeding unit name. Anyone having previously entered the Calgary Bull Sale under one Breeding Unit Name, must forward a written application one year prior to the sale, to the Alberta Cattle Breeders Board of Directors for approval if they wish to change the breeding unit name.
Purebred Beef Bulls Only: All bulls entered in the Calgary Bull Sale must be purebred.
The association shall have the right to refuse any entries submitted by any contributor.
Section II: Conditions of Sale
Reserve Bids: All reserve bids over the upset price must be submitted in writing and announced from the auction block prior to the sale of that individual animal and will be subject to commission.
Commission:Commission will be 8% of the last dollar bid. In view of the $150 entry fee, $100 of that fee is prepaid commission. A deduction of $3.00 (+ GST) per bull will be paid to the Alberta Beef Producers. A deduction of $7.42 (GST included) per bull weighed will be paid to the Alberta Cattle Breeders for wood chips. A deduction of $1.12 will be paid to the Brand Inspection Office.
Recording Transfers: The seller is required to transfer any bulls sold to the buyer and pay for the service. The Alberta Cattle Breeders Association without any extra cost will attend to this service on behalf of the seller, but the fees for recording will be charged to the seller.
Section III: Canadian Livestock Health Regulations
Canadian Cattle Identification Agency - All Bulls are required to have an official CCIA tag.
All bulls must be free of mange, ringworm and warts.
Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation form must accompany bulls to the scale.
Incomplete or illegible forms can result in refused entry.
Section IV: Inspection of Animals for Sale and Culling
Culling: Bulls will be culled on the basis of breeding soundness, weight, scrotal circumference measurement by breed standards and temperament. All culled bulls must be removed from the premises no later than 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday , March 5, 2008.
Inspection:The Alberta Cattle Breeders Association shall inspect the bulls of each breed for tattoo, semen certificate, and weight. An inspector appointed by the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association, on the recommendations of any such inspections, shall remove any such bulls (any such bulls considered inferior in quality or not being representative of the breed, or not being of soundness in so far as it may be determined by physical examination) from the sale premises.
All bulls should be in good health and condition before being shipped to the sale, as culling will be severe.
The entry fee paid by the consignor to the Association in respect of any such animals removed or rejected as aforesaid shall belong to and remain the sole property of the Association.
Livestock Manifest: All bulls will be brand inspected and a livestock manifest must be presented at the weigh scale.
Tattoo Inspection: The tattoo of each animal will be checked by the Inspector. Unless the tattoo corresponds with the pedigree and is legible to the inspector, the animal will be refused entry. The inspector's decision as to the legibility of the tattoo is final. Once a bull has been examined at the scale, there will be absolutely no re-tattooing.
Section V: Weighing and Measuring Bulls
Weighing of Bulls: No bulls will be allowed in the barn before Monday, March 3, 2008 . All bulls must arrive no later than 12:00 pm on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 and must be weighed by 12:00 pm on Tuesday , March 4, 2008. All bulls will be officially weighed and
examined by the Association on the sale premises. Weight, date of birth, birth weight and weight per day of age will be posted on the stall card and placed above each bull. A Weigh ORDER procedure will be implemented at the scale.
Weight Requirements: Bulls born in 2006 entered in the 2008 Calgary Bull Sale require a 2.2 weight per day of age to be eligible for sale. Bulls born in 2007 entered in the 2008 Calgary Bull Sale require a 2.5 weight per day of age to be eligible for sale. Age will be calculated from the bull's birth date to the day weighed at the sale. There are no WPDA requirements for three-year-old bulls.
Birth Weights: Birth weights may be noted on the official entry form. If they are not available, please mark N/A on the entry form. Birth weights, if available, will be posted on the official stall card at the 2008 Calgary Bull Sale. Birth weights recorded on registration certificates will be transferred to stall cards.

Semen Certificate:All bulls entered in the Calgary Bull Sale are required to have a completed Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation form (Western Canadian Assoc. of Bovine Practitioners). A qualified veterinarian must issue this form. Incomplete or illegible forms can result in refused entry. All bulls must be semen tested "satisfactory" within 30 days prior to sale. The scrotal circumference must appear on the semen certificate. Bulls may be subject to re-measurement and semen test at the discretion of the official inspector appointed by the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association.
RIBEYE, MARBLING AND BACKFAT MEASURED: Yearling bulls will be scanned for RIBEYE, MARBLE AND BACKFAT and posted on the Stall Cards. 2-year old bulls will be scanned for backfat and posted. This process will be done at the weigh-scale during the weigh-in and vet inspection
Section VI: Breeding Guarantee
Should a bull fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the consignor within six months following date of purchase. If satisfactory agreement cannot be reached between buyer and seller, the Association will attempt to mediate a settlement.
Association is Agent Only: It is to be clearly understood that the Association is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller. The Association is not in any way responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations, neither does the Association assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of monies between parties, and any legal action taken in exceptional cases, must be between the buyer and seller.
The consignor is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the bull is sold, or for sickness not apparent at sale time.
ll transportation charges on bulls returned to the consignor are for account of the purchaser. No incidental expenses such as feed, care, veterinary charges, etc., will be charged by either party when making settlement.
Under the Breeding Guarantee, in no event will the consignor be liable to the purchaser for more than the purchase price paid at the Calgary Bull Sale for the bull in question.
Section VII: Catalogue and Sale Order
Entries will be catalogued and sold in four alphabetical groups: A - E, F - L, M - R, and S - Z. These groups rotate annually, by moving the group selling first in a given year, to the end the following year. Further, the letters in each of the four groups also rotate annually by moving the letter
appearing last in a given year, to the beginning the following year. The following will be treated as one letter: IJK , PQ , UV, and XYZ. In 2008 the entries will be catalogued and sold in the following order: (C, D, E, A, B), (H, IJK, L, F, G), (O, PQ, R, M, N) and (W, XYZ, S, T, UV).
The consignor of the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will sell at the start of their respective sales. The consignors of Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion have the option of selling the remainder of their string either after the sale of the Champions or in catalogue order.
Bulls sell in entirety and entire ownership changes hands at the fall of the auctioneer's hammer.
All semen drawn prior to sale and disposition of same must be announced and declared publicly prior to sale.
Section VIII: General Rules and Regulations
Liability: Not withstanding anything to the contrary herein contained, it is understood that each consignor, by the act of entry for exhibiting, waives all claims against the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association and/or the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, and/or any of the members, officials or agents thereof, for any and all injury, loss or damage, which he/she, his/her employees, helpers and/or property may sustain arising in any way out of the operations or activities of the said Association and/or Stampede, officers, members or agents and indemnifies the said Association, and/or Stampede officer, member or agents from and against any loss or damage sustained by the said Association and/or Stampede by reason of any claims made by any of his helpers or employees or their executors, administrators, or assign and that any helpers or assistants introduced to or engaged by any consignor through the said Association and/or Stampede, or through their members, officers, or agents shall be at the sole risk and responsibility of such consignors.
In case of typographical or other errors discovered, the Auctioneer will announce corrections and a memorandum of such corrections shall take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore
cautioned to pay attention to the auctioneer's announcements.
Management of Sale: The management will be under the control of the Executive Committee of the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association and the Manager will have entire charge of all bulls in the sale area, stable accommodation and routine.
By-Bidding: There shall be no by-bidding by the owner of an animal or anyone authorized by the owner. Statutory Declaration may be required from any buyer or seller to the effect that any purchase of sale is bona-fide and that there has been no by-bidding in connection therewith. Any owner guilty of by-bidding or authorizing anyone to do so for the owner will be excluded from participating in future sales for a term to be determined by the Executive Committee.
Every care will be exercised by the management to prevent injury to or loss of property, and to insure prompt delivery of animals. The Association (acting only as agent) will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur, nor for any stock incorrectly routed, whether through negligence on the part of its officers or servants or not. Insurance against loss should be taken out by the owner should they consider it necessary. In all cases, however, the influences of the Association will be exerted as far as possible, to hold all parties strictly to these regulations.
The consignor hereby appoints and constitutes the Association as his agent for the purposes aforesaid with full power and authority to sub delegate its authority and powers
.
Purchase of Animals: All sales are to be in Canadian dollars, payable at par in Calgary . U.S. funds will be accepted at the current rate of exchange for the purchase of all livestock. The Secretary is prepared to purchase animals for persons unable to attend the sale personally. The greatest care will be used in executing such orders in accordance with instructions given by the purchaser and no charge will be made for this service. A purchaser should send a cheque in the amount he is willing to pay. Proper refund will be made if a suitable animal can be purchased for less than the amount sent.
Delivery : Sellers are responsible for the delivery of bulls within Alberta borders and coordinate the delivery to points beyond. A $50
per bull discount will be credited to the buyer transporting their bull(s). This will be deducted from the consignors account. Sellers and Purchasers must coordinate all necessary transportation arrangements and let the settlement office know . The seller must water and feed his entries. Purchasers must supply feed for the animal(s) while in transit.
Feed, Water, Etc.: An initial base of bedding will be supplied. All contributors will be required to supply all necessary feed and care for their bulls up to and including the last day of the current year's sale. Any contributor failing to comply with these regulations may be excluded from participating in future sales held by this Association. Sellers or their agents will be required to take care of their animals immediately upon arrival at point of sale, have the animals placed in the stalls, remain in attendance with them, and feed and water them. Feed and straw must be kept to a minimum in the barn, as it constitutes a fire hazard.
Feed and Loading Charges: A fee will be charged to the purchaser for feeding (hay only) and caring for the animals from conclusion of sale until loaded, where the animals are held by instructions of purchaser.
Release of Bulls: Consignors are prohibited to teardown or load out bulls until all Breed Sales are completed . No bulls may be removed from the sale premises without a release slip, which must be presented to designated staff upon release.
Disputes: If any disputes arise between two or more bidders it shall be settled by the animal or animals being again put up and resold. The decision of the Auctioneer shall be final in all such cases.
Ownership and Settlement: Should any purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, the Association reserves the full power to re-sell the animal, in cooperation with the seller to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further intimation, and any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses, will be collected from the defaulter.
Immediately after each purchase is declared, the risk of the animals shall be exclusively with the purchaser, and it is declared that until a settlement shall be made in the terms of those conditions, the delivery of the animals shall be suspended.
The secretary will have power to give receipt in full for all payments for stock and will remit by mail the amount realized less the proper charges. Cheques will be available for pick up on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 in the Agriculture Department of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, 2nd level, Agriculture Building . After that time cheques will be mailed, provided registration paper(s) and transfer(s) are in order.
Executive Committee Right: The Executive Committee reserves the right to decide any point not covered by the rules which said committee considers necessary in the proper regulations and management of sale.
Sale Agreement: Every person who contributes a bull to the sale and everyone who bids at the sale, by doing so agrees to the foregoing terms and conditions of the sale.
City By-Law 4070: Specifically states in part: "All electrical equipment which has a metal frame or enclosure must be properly grounded by means of three wire cords and caps". Failure to comply with this requirement could mean cancellation of privileges to use electrical power. We are advised that this by-law is applicable to exhibitors utilizing such equipment in Stampede Park .
Private Sales: Bulls consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. Animals not entered for sale will not be allowed on the sale premises.
Stall Cards:
Stall cards supplied by the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association must be posted above each bull. Consignors will not be allowed to advertise other sales. THERE WILL BE NO TAMPERING WITH THE OFFICIAL STALL CARDS.
Stall Signs: Only signs of consignors in the Calgary Bull Sale can be displayed in the stalls at the Calgary Bull Sale.
Nose Ring and Halters: Bulls must wear a nose ring and a suitable halter. Bulls must be halter broken and each animal supplied with a good halter. If this is not adhered to, the superintendent has instructions to provide a suitable halter, the cost to be collected from the seller of the animal. All bulls must have a nose ring or they will be refused entry. Nose rings are not to be removed while bulls are housed in the
Agriculture Building on Stampede Park.
Neck Ropes:All animals must be tied with a suitable halter and substantial neck rope. The neck ropes must remain on the bulls at all times within the Agriculture Building and must be left on the animals after the sale. A fine of $10.60 (GST included) per animal will be charged to any consignor in non-compliance.
Floor Fans: Floor fans or butt fans will not be allowed in the Agriculture Building.
Insurance: Consignors desiring insurance must give this matter their personal attention.
Smoking Policy: In accordance with the city of Calgary by-law, the Agriculture Building is a non-smoking facility. There will be no smoking allowed.

Failure to comply with rules as stated in this book may result in suspension from participation in the current year's sale and future sales at the Calgary Bull Sale .
